So, what is an Index Seminum? Index Seminum is Latin for ‘seed list’. In botanical garden circles it is a free exchange of seed between institutions for the purposes of conservation, education, and scientific research.

Our Index Seminum offerings are seed collected from the combined two gardens’ collections of more than 35,000 taxa. There are two ways to acquire seed from the Index Seminum. If you are a botanical garden/arboreta or a scientific researcher, please send an email to our Garden Curator, Doug Ruhren at doug.ruhren@jlbg.org. The deadline for submitting institutional orders is February 16, 2026. Distributions will be mailed in March 2026.  We cannot provide a phytosanitary certificate.

In early April, once the list has been distributed to our network of botanical gardens and researchers worldwide, it will be posted for members. At that time, you will be able to select a number of packets based on your membership level. Seeds will be subject to availability.
