Oof, that’s too bad. Looking at photos, ‘Henri DesFosse’ does seem bluer than the other delilianus hybrids, which is what I want, but I’m not sure I like the foliage habit.

The blue ceanothus are a no-go in NC. The only successful ones here are our native Ceanothus americanus, and the C. americanus hybrid, Ceanothus x delilianus ‘Henri DesFosse’.

I used to live near Austin (west of 35) and currently live near Raleigh. Here are some plants I experimented with near Austin that did well for me despite my not seeing them in anyone else’s gardens there. You could give them a try if they look interesting.

Cerinthe major var. purpurascens
Euphorbia characias var. wulfenii
Juniperus virginiana ‘Grey Owl’
Orlaya grandiflora
Santolina virens
Verbena aristigera (tenuisecta)

That’s in addition to the many great native and adapted mainstays that are more commonly grown in central TX. Now I have my own list of those to try in NC!

One plant I always wanted to try in TX, but never got around to, are the various blue-flowering Ceanothus from California. Now I’ve switched gears to pondering which ones would grow best in NC. Here is a good overview of their preferences, for anyone who is tempted:

It is informative and attractive. I sincerely appreciate and enjoy the outstanding effort in preserving the plants from around the globe that JLBG has accomplished. While I currently live in central Texas on the Edward’s Plateau which limits the species I am able to grow successfully, I love to experiment and dream of the many offerings from JLBG.
